These elements of form should be followed:

  1. Head and shoulders: Keep the head up and centered between the shoulders, with eyes focused straight ahead to the horizon. Keep the shoulders relaxed but straight – avoid slouching forward.
  2. Abdominal muscles: It is important to actively use the abdominal muscles to help support the trunk of the body and the spine. To do this, keep the stomach pulled in slightly and stand fully upright. Avoid leaning forward as you walk.
  3. Hips: The majority of the forward motion should start with the hips. Each stride should feel natural – not too long or too short. Most people make the mistake of trying to take too long of stride.
  4. Arms and hands: Arms should stay close to the body, with elbows bent at a 90 degree angle. While walking, the arms should keep in motion, swinging front to back in pace with the stride of the opposite leg. Remember to keep hands relaxed, lightly cupped with the palms inward and thumbs on top. Avoid clenching the hands or making tight fists.
  5. Feet: With each step, land gently on the heel and midfoot, rolling smoothly to push off with the toes. Be mindful about using the balls of the feet and toes to push forward with each step.


Using a Treadmill for Exercise Walking

When using a treadmill for walking exercise, all of the above guidelines are still important, with the additional caution to avoid using the handrails as much as possible (unless they are needed to keep balanced).

Sleep sciatic nerve pain relief was a huge issue for me. I mean, We all need to sleep, right? But it’s kind of hard when you feel like your back is on fire!

Here are a few tips I picked up to make falling asleep a little easier each night.

Enjoy a bath before bed

I Know what you’re thinking, a bath sounds cheesy, but a warm bath can encourage your body to release endorphins by relaxing the muscles around your sciatic nerve roots. The temperature of the water should be warm – not too hot – not too cold. Hot water will make it difficult to fall asleep by raising your body temperature, and a cold bath just sounds terrible.

If a bath doesn’t sound appealing to you, I would suggest a heat therapy pad like UTK far-infrared heat therapy pad, to help you relax your sciatic nerve pain.

Elevate your knees

The sciatic nerve flares up when one of the 5 roots in your lower back is compressed or irritated. Sleeping with elevated knees will minimize the pressure from your lumbar discs placed on your roots.

If this is the cause you might want to try purchasing a firm mattress or even try removing the box spring from under your bed!

Don’t give up after one night—you may struggle to adjust to the firmness of the ground. Give it a week, and if your symptoms remain unchanged—or you still can’t sleep because you miss your mattress—retire your yoga mat or towel.
